Qatar’s Minister of Public Health Mansoor bin Ebrahim Al Mahmoud has met with Suleiman bin Saleh Al Dakhil, Director General of the GCC Health Council, during the latter’s visit to the State of Qatar.
The meeting, held in Doha on August 24, 2026, focused on ways to strengthen cooperation between Qatar and the GCC Health Council, while also reviewing the Council’s main activities and future plans.
Strengthening Gulf Health Cooperation
Discussions centred on opportunities to further develop collaboration between Qatar and the regional health body.
The GCC Health Council plays a key role in coordinating health initiatives across Gulf Cooperation Council member states, with its work focused on improving healthcare systems, strengthening prevention and supporting greater integration between countries in the region.
The Council’s strategic priorities for 2026–2030 include strengthening health security, improving access to key health products and services, supporting healthy lifestyles and disease prevention, expanding health data capabilities and encouraging regional research and knowledge-sharing.
Council Activities and Future Plans Reviewed
During the Doha meeting, Al Mahmoud and Al Dakhil also reviewed the GCC Health Council’s major activities and plans for the coming period.
The Council works across a broad range of areas connected with joint Gulf health action, including:
• Public-health programmes
• Disease prevention
• Health policy coordination
• Medical research and knowledge exchange
• Digital health and data
• Health workforce development
• Pharmaceutical cooperation
• Regional health security
Its mandate includes developing joint healthcare strategies, encouraging collaborative research, sharing expertise and strengthening coordination among member states.
Digital Health and Regional Integration in Focus
Digital transformation has become an increasingly important part of the GCC Health Council’s work.
Its current strategy includes developing advanced health-data capabilities and using technology to strengthen cooperation between national health systems.
Earlier in August, the Council’s Executive Board also reviewed initiatives and digital systems aimed at supporting joint Gulf health action and improving integration among member states.
Such initiatives reflect a wider regional effort to use technology, coordinated policies and data-driven decision-making to improve healthcare efficiency and patient outcomes.
Supporting Health Security Across the GCC
Health security is another major priority for the Council.
Regional cooperation allows GCC countries to coordinate preparedness and responses to public-health risks that may affect more than one country.
The Gulf Health Council’s strategic framework includes supporting member states in preparedness, early detection and rapid response to health hazards, alongside strengthening regional and global health partnerships.
The organisation also works with member states on infectious-disease prevention and other initiatives designed to safeguard public health across the region.
Qatar’s Role in Joint Gulf Health Action
Qatar actively participates in GCC health cooperation through regional programmes, meetings and initiatives.
The latest meeting between the Minister of Public Health and the GCC Health Council Director General reflects the country’s continued engagement in strengthening healthcare coordination and exchanging expertise with neighbouring Gulf states.
Greater cooperation can support common approaches in areas ranging from disease prevention and pharmaceutical security to digital transformation, medical research and workforce development.
Building More Integrated Gulf Health Systems
The GCC Health Council was established in 1976 and is organisationally linked to the GCC General Secretariat.
Its mission is to strengthen cooperation and integration among member states while supporting initiatives that improve public health and healthcare systems throughout the Gulf.
As Gulf countries continue investing heavily in healthcare infrastructure, digital health and preventive medicine, coordinated regional action is expected to remain important in addressing shared health challenges.
The Doha meeting reinforces this approach by bringing Qatar and the GCC Health Council together to discuss existing programmes and future opportunities for cooperation.
